PCOS occurs in women and girls of childbearing age and is due to hormonal imbalance. Symptoms frequently experienced are menstrual irregularity, excess hair growth, acne and obesity. In working with women with PCOS, weight gain and obesity and the resulting complications is often an area of concern. Lifestyle changes involving a healthy diet, and physical activity at least five days a week are effective for weight loss. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates will increase weight loss and management. Women with PCOS that I work with in my practice often experience high levels of stress, and may be emotionally drained from dealing with the symptoms from PCOS and excess weight gain. A health program that addresses healthy eating, a physical activity program, stress management, emotional coping skills, and health coaching and personal support can greatly enhance the quality of life for women with PCOS.
